Who are we?
Park Wrekin College Gymnastic Club is the most successful competitive gymnastic club in the West Midlands. For 30 years gymnasts have been coached to represent Great Britain at Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth championships.
It is also a club completely committed to enabling every member the opportunity of enjoying the sport of gymnastics at whatever level they aspire to. We run beginner classes, pre-school classes, improver classes, adult classes as well as competitive gymnastic classes. The club also has an active programme of developing coaches and judges.
The clubs permanent home is at Wrekin College, Telford, Shropshire, which with it’s boarding school facilities provides a unique opportunity in Great Britain to combine education and elite gymnastic training. The club also uses the leading gymnastic facility in Europe, Lilleshall National Sports Centre, several times a week.
About Us
Park Wrekin College Gymnastic Club was founded in the 1970’s at Park Junior School in Wellington. Gymnastics was in an era of huge expansion in the wake of Olga Korbuts performance at the 1972 Olympics and the emergence of Nadia Comăneci at the 1976 Games. Park Wrekin College Gymnastic Club quickly became one of the leading clubs in Great Britain providing gymnasts for the 1984 and 1992 Olympic Games. In 1990 the club moved to its present home at Wrekin College and had instant success with Laura Timmins becoming the youngest ever British Senior Champion in 1991. This was the start of a new era with Park Wrekin College becoming British Team Champions in 2001, and producing many more British Age Group and Junior Champions.
The current generation of gymnasts are just as successful with Rhyannon Jones winning the British Espoir (Under 13) Championship in June 2011 and Alice Kinsella winning the British 9 year old Championships at the end of 2010.
Christine Still, International Performance Coach and Master Coach of British Gymnastics is Head Coach and leads a team of highly committed and qualified coaches who are the spine of the club.
As a club we are committed to every gymnast having the opportunity to reach their potential, with more than 50 competitive gymnasts at all levels and another 200 taking part without the pressure of competitions. We believe we offer gymnastics at all levels. Classes take place each day both at Wrekin College and Lilleshall National Sports Centre. The close proximity of Lilleshall, the finest gymnastic trainng venue in Europe, to Wrekin College means that our gymnasts have the opportunity to train there each week.
The Pre-school section of the club is a very important part with classes running most days. The excellent introduction to movement is an advantage to all pre-school children.
